Icelandic is the national language and a source of national pride. It has changed little over the centuries, and locals can still easily read the ancient sagas. That said, nearly all Icelanders speak fluent English, especially in Reykjavík.

However, learning some Icelandic is not only appreciated by locals, it can also open doors socially and professionally. The language is complex with difficult grammar and pronunciation, but don’t be discouraged. Free online courses are available at Icelandic Online (icelandiconline.com), and formal classes are offered at Mímir (mimir.is) or The Tin Can Factory (tincanfactory.eu).
